Which compliance documents should an FIBC buyer request?

Request only the documents that apply to the intended contents, contact layers, handling environment and destination market. Identify whether the question concerns resin, woven fabric, coating, liner, ink, thread, filler cord, labels or the complete bag. For United States food-contact use, the FDA explains that authorization and compliance depend on each substance, its manufacturer or supplier and the intended conditions of use. For electrostatic FIBCs in hazardous explosive atmospheres, IEC 61340-4-4:2018 defines classification, testing and safe-use requirements. Dangerous-goods transport follows the applicable UN and national modal rules, not the ordinary non-dangerous-goods product category.

FOOD CONTACT

Check every layer that may contact the contents

The outer woven body, coating, liner, closures, thread and printing may have different roles. Identify the actual food-contact layer and whether direct or indirect contact is expected. Ask for a declaration or authorization basis that matches the supplier, material and conditions of use.

Before relying on a report, request the full current document and confirm the tested sample, report number, test method, result limits and whether the quoted product falls within scope.

ELECTROSTATIC

Do not select Type A, B, C or D from a product name alone

The correct electrostatic classification depends on the charged contents, minimum ignition energy, surrounding flammable atmosphere, liner combination, grounding conditions and the complete risk assessment. Type C requires an effective grounding arrangement; other types have different construction and use limits. A color convention is not a substitute for marking and evidence.

Request the bag and liner classification, qualification record, operating conditions, grounding instructions where relevant and the current standard basis. IEC 61340-4-4:2018 remains the primary standard reference identified for electrostatic classification of FIBCs in hazardous explosive atmospheres.

DANGEROUS GOODS

Separate ordinary FIBC selection from regulated transport packaging

If the contents are dangerous goods, provide the full regulatory classification and transport route before the supplier proposes packaging. The package approval, marking and permitted contents must align. A bag designed for non-dangerous powder should never be upgraded to a dangerous-goods claim through marketing wording.

Does “food bag” prove food-contact compliance?

No. Treat it as an application label. Confirm the contact materials, intended conditions of use, destination rules and supporting documents for the quoted product.

Does a PE liner make every chemical compatible?

No. Compatibility depends on the chemical, concentration, temperature, exposure time, liner material and complete bag construction.

Is Type C always better than Type D?

No. Each electrostatic type has different construction, operating conditions and restrictions. Selection must follow the site risk assessment and applicable standard.

Does CE marking apply to every FIBC?

No. CE marking applies only where the quoted product falls under an applicable EU harmonisation requirement. Request the exact legal basis and product-specific document rather than a blanket logo claim.

How should I verify an SGS report?

Request the complete report and use SGS document verification or its certified-client/product directories where applicable. Check that the report has not been altered and that the sample and scope match the quoted item.
